Myrtle Beach Pelicans Extend Winning Streak to Six with Doubleheader Sweep

Strong pitching leads Pelicans to two victories over the Columbia Fireflies

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans extended their winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep over the Columbia Fireflies on Wednesday. The Pelicans won game one 5-4 and game two 3-1, improving their record to 6-1 on the season. Game One: Pelicans 5, Fireflies 4 Despite falling behind 3-0 early, the Pelicans rallied to take the lead in the fifth inning. Jake Washer singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Liam Spence drove him in with a single and advanced to second on the throw. After a balk moved Spence to third, Bryce Ball drove him in with a sacrifice fly. The Pelicans took the lead in the sixth when Alberto Mineo hit a two-run double to score Washer and Spence. The Fireflies tied the game in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly, but the Pelicans answered back in the bottom of the inning when Spence singled to drive in Washer and give the Pelicans a 5-4 lead. Jaylyn Hernandez pitched seven strong innings for the Pelicans, allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out seven batters and walked two. Wyatt Burns pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Jordan Nichols earned his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. Game Two: Pelicans 3, Fireflies 1 The Pelicans jumped out to an early lead in game two when Luis Verdugo singled to drive in Washer in the first inning. The Fireflies tied the game in the third inning on a solo home run, but the Pelicans regained the lead in the fifth when Verdugo hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Spence. The Pelicans added an insurance run in the eighth inning when Washer singled to drive in Spence. Ryne Ellis pitched six solid innings for the Pelicans, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out four batters and walked one. Kyle Johns pitched two scoreless innings of relief and Nichols struck out the side in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
