Tiktok Ban America

US House Moves to Ban TikTok, Fines for App Users in the Works

Major Progress in Legislative Ban

The potential ban on TikTok in the United States took a significant step forward on Saturday when the House of Representatives passed a contentious bill that would impose hefty fines on users of banned apps.

Fines for Tech Giants

The proposed legislation establishes fines of $5,000 per user for any banned app. This means that Apple and Google, the dominant app stores in the US, could face massive fines if the bill becomes law and TikTok is prohibited.

Legislative Timeline

The House's recent action follows a series of legislative efforts aimed at limiting TikTok's presence in the US. In March 2024, the House Energy and Commerce Committee advanced a bill that would have required TikTok to sever ties with its Chinese parent company or face a ban.

However, despite the House's vote, it is unlikely that TikTok will disappear from the United States anytime soon. The bill must still pass the Senate and be signed by President Biden before becoming law. Additionally, TikTok has indicated that it will continue to fight any ban attempts.
