End Of An Era For The Popular Cd Reader

Apple SuperDrive is Rumored to Be Discontinued

End of an era for the popular CD reader

Apple's SuperDrive USB external optical drive has been a staple in the company's product lineup for over a decade, but it appears that its time may be coming to an end. As noted by one of our readers, it is no longer possible to buy an Apple USB SuperDrive online via the official Apple Store in the US.

Stock remains available on some of Apple's regional stores, such as the UK, and the USB SuperDrive can still be found elsewhere online at retailers like Amazon. However, its absence from the US Apple Store is a significant development, suggesting that Apple may be phasing out the product.

More notably, the USB SuperDrive is one of Apple's longest-selling devices. It was first introduced in 2008 alongside the MacBook Air, which was the first Apple laptop to not include a built-in optical drive. The SuperDrive has remained a popular accessory for Mac users who need to read or write CDs or DVDs, but its declining sales in recent years may have prompted Apple to discontinue it.

The discontinuation of the USB SuperDrive is a sign of the times. Optical drives have become increasingly rare in recent years as more and more people consume media digitally. Even Apple's own MacBooks and iMacs no longer come with built-in optical drives, and many users have transitioned to using external USB drives or cloud storage services for their media needs.
